# Create an assistant

> Choose a starting point, configure its capabilities, and publish the version you have tested.

Create an assistant in the subaccount where its calls, messages, and connected actions belong. Use a descriptive name so your team can distinguish production assistants from experiments.

## Choose a starting point

Open **Assistants → Create assistant**.

| Option | Use it when |
| - | - |
| Generate Assistant | You want a draft based on a business description |
| From template | You want an available template as a starting point |
| Import with ID | You have an assistant to copy and will review destination resources |
| Blank canvas | You want to write the configuration yourself |

Follow the selected dialog to create the assistant. Generated or imported content still needs review: confirm the business name, instructions, voice, tools, and account-specific identifiers before enabling customer traffic.

## Configure the job

1. Write the assistant's purpose and response limits in its prompt.
2. Open **Knowledge Base** and assign the relevant business information.
3. Open **Tools & APIs** and attach only the actions needed for the job.
4. If the job includes booking, open **Calendars** and select the intended calendar.
5. Configure **Chat Settings** or **Call Settings** for the channel you will use.

The standard booking assignment selects one calendar. A prompt listing several calendars does not grant routing to them; use the [booking guide](/v3/guides/workflows/book-appointments) for that separate workflow.

## Test the configuration

Use Chat Lab for wording and tool behavior, and Voice Lab for the spoken conversation. Test a successful request, missing information, and a failed action. Inspect any resulting booking or CRM change.

## Publish

Wait for changes to save, then click **Publish**. A disabled assistant can show **Enable & Publish**; review its assigned channels before enabling it. If publication fails or reports a conflicting change, reload and retry the intended version.

Publishing the assistant applies its configuration. Phone-number routing, active chat tags, and widget assignment still determine how customers reach it. Finish with a test through the channel you intend to use.

See [Quickstart](/v3/guides/getting-started/first-assistant), [Voice Studio](/v3/voice-studio), and [Platform Tools](/v3/platform-tools).

## Assistant workspace reference

| Area | What you can configure or use |
| - | - |
| Builder | Write instructions and select the assistant’s model or published flow. |
| Global Prompt | Available for flow-backed assistants; keep shared instructions accessible alongside the flow. |
| Voice Lab | Test the spoken assistant; also verify the actual phone route when applicable. |
| Chat Lab | Test conversational responses and tool behavior. |
| Knowledge Lab | Test source-based answers. It currently uses the first assigned base; verify all intended bases on the live channel. |
| Chat Settings | Channels, active/exclusion/replying tags, response timing, sleep, and conversation behavior. [Chat configuration reference](/v3/guides/chat/activate-ghl-chat). |
| Call Settings | Voice-call behavior and timing. [All settings](/v3/guides/voice/call-settings). |
| Autopilot | Configure automated follow-up behavior when available for the account. Check timing and stop behavior before enabling it. |
| Tools & APIs | Attach/manage tools. [Tool configuration](/v3/guides/tools/manage). |
| Map Custom Fields | Map extracted conversation data to connected fields. [Extraction configuration](/v3/guides/workflows/extract-custom-fields). |
| Knowledge Base | Add/remove assigned bases. [Source and assignment settings](/v3/guides/knowledge/add-sources). |
| Calendars | Choose the booking calendar. [Booking settings](/v3/guides/workflows/book-appointments). |
| Find & Replace | Configure exact output-text substitution rules. [Instruction tools](/v3/guides/assistants/write-instructions). |
| Team Notes | Maintain notes associated with the assistant. |

The nine toolkit entries are Chat Settings, Call Settings, Autopilot, Tools & APIs, Map Custom Fields, Knowledge Base, Calendars, Find & Replace, and Team Notes. Available panels can depend on account access and assistant type.

## Assistant model choices

The assistant selector currently offers the following text-model labels. These are configuration choices; provider routing and fallback can affect the underlying model used.

| Provider group | Selectable models |
| - | - |
| OpenAI | GPT 6 Luna; GPT 5.6 Luna; GPT 5.4; GPT 5.2; GPT 5.1; GPT 5; GPT 5 Mini; GPT 5 Nano; GPT 4.1; GPT 4.1 mini; GPT 4.1 nano; GPT 4o; GPT 4o mini |
| Anthropic | Claude Haiku 5.5; Claude Haiku 4.5 |
| Google | Gemini 2.5 Flash |
| Qwen | Qwen3 235b |
| Moonshot | Kimi K2.6 |
| Z.ai | GLM 5.2; GLM 5.3 Flash |
| Published flows | Flows published in this subaccount; see [Flow Builder](/v3/guides/flows/first-flow). |

Kimi K2.5 can still appear as the label of an older saved configuration but is no longer offered for new selection. Selecting a regular model clears the flow assignment. With a GPT Live voice, the selector controls **Chat & tools model** and does not offer Flow assignment; change to a compatible standard voice before using a flow. Review the selected value after creation or import instead of assuming all creation methods share the same default.
