# Install a text chat widget

> Create a website chat entry, copy its own embed, and test a visitor conversation.

Use a chat widget to let website visitors message an assistant. The widget list can offer **Chat widget** and, when enabled for your account, **Chat widget V2**. Use the embed generated for the widget you create.

This companion covers installation. Keep the [Voice-enabled chat widget guide](/v3/voice-enabled-chat-widget) as the current reference for the V2 voice-and-text experience.

## Before you begin

You need an assistant in the selected account and access to the website's HTML or footer-code area. Prepare a short question and one expected task to test after installation.

## Create the widget

1. Open **Widgets**.
2. Select **Create widget**.
3. Choose the widget type available for your account.
4. For **Chat widget**, enter a name and select **Create widget**. For **Chat widget V2**, choose a template in the template picker and complete its creation settings; creating a matching assistant is optional.
5. Open the created widget.
6. Assign the assistant that should answer visitors.
7. Configure the greeting and appearance offered by that widget.
8. For a text-only V2 widget, open **Behavior** and leave **Voice calling** off.
9. Select **Save changes**.

Enabling V2 **Voice calling** also requires a voice agent on the assigned assistant and an HTTPS website. The editor shows whether one is connected.

## Settings for the earlier Chat widget

| Setting | Choices or purpose |
| - | - |
| AI Model | Select the assistant from the current account. |
| Icon | Choose from the icon picker. |
| Color | Set the widget's color. |
| Display Name | Name shown to visitors. |
| Dark Mode | On/off. |
| Auto-Open On Page Load | On/off. |
| Popup Message | Invitation shown near the widget. |
| Intro Message | Initial greeting. |
| Prompts | Add, edit, or remove suggested visitor messages. |

These are the earlier widget's configuration controls. For every V2 option, including all five tabs, form field types, notification sounds, layout choices, and handoff settings, use the [Chat Widget V2 configuration reference](/v3/guides/widgets/chat-widget-v2#configuration-reference).

## Install the generated embed

1. For V2, open **Install** and select **Copy** under **Embed snippet**. For the earlier **Chat widget** type, select **Get Code** and copy its generated script.
2. Paste the script into the website's footer/custom-code area or before its closing `</body>` tag on the pages where chat should appear.
3. Publish the website.

V2's script identifies the saved widget and loads its configuration. The earlier widget script includes assistant and appearance attributes directly, so copy fresh code when changing those embedded settings. Do not combine attributes from the two widget types.

## Verify a visitor conversation

1. Open the published page in a new browser session.
2. Open the chat widget.
3. Send the prepared question.
4. Confirm the intended assistant replies with the expected answer.
5. Test the configured task and verify its destination result if it writes to another system.

If voice is enabled, separately start a browser call and verify microphone permission and two-way speech using the [voice widget guide](/v3/voice-enabled-chat-widget).

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Check |
| - | - |
| No widget on the published page | The installed snippet, site publication, and whether the website allows the script to load. |
| Old appearance or wrong assistant | Save the widget; for the earlier type, replace the installed script with freshly generated code. |
| Chat works but voice does not | HTTPS, V2 **Voice calling**, the assigned voice agent, and browser microphone permission. |
| Chat widget V2 is not offered | Use the available type or ask the account administrator about access. Do not substitute a manually invented V2 script. |
