# Check automatic contact-field updates

> Verify the mapping and saved result when an assistant collects contact information.

Use [automatic extraction](/v3/guides/workflows/extract-custom-fields) to turn a customer's answer into a GHL custom field. The setup lives in the Assistable assistant's **Map Custom Fields** panel, not on the GHL contact record. The GHL contact record is where you check the result.

## Connect the question to the field

1. Create the target custom field in the intended GHL location.
2. Open **Map Custom Fields → New extraction** in Assistable.
3. Name the extraction, describe exactly what to capture, and select the GHL **Custom field**.
4. Select **Create extraction**, then **Add to assistant**.
5. In the assistant prompt, include the question that will collect that answer.

A prompt question, an extraction definition, and assignment to the assistant serve different purposes. All three must match the intended task.

## Test what the customer actually said

Use a test contact. Give one value, correct it, and then inspect the GHL field after processing. Also test a conversation without that answer. Unknown values are omitted; this does not clear an older saved value. A normal chat reply does not prove the field update has finished.

If a field remains unchanged, check the assignment and selected mapping first. If the field list itself fails, repair the account's [GHL authorization](/v3/guides/troubleshooting/ghl-connection). If GHL rejects a value, confirm the field's type and allowed values. Avoid duplicate display names for fields that must hold different information.

Use [contact-update tools](/v3/guides/workflows/correct-contact-name) for immediate identity changes needed before booking or another tool. Use extraction for the separately processed custom-field result.
